“Love your enemies—for love triumphs over hate.”
A beautiful sentiment—but how many can truly live it out?
Valley of the Shadow of Death is a powerful and contemplative Hong Kong drama that wrestles with the boundaries of faith, pain, and forgiveness. Pastor Leung (Anthony Wong) is a devoted man of God, but his world collapses when his daughter takes her own life after being sexually assaulted. Years later, the assailant—Lok (Au Chun-ho)—is released from juvenile detention and joins Leung’s church as a repentant believer.
Faced with the man who destroyed his family, Pastor Leung must make a harrowing decision: uphold the Christian ideals of forgiveness, or surrender to his rage and grief.
Directed by Lam Shin and Sunny Chan Yung, and written by Chan, this film strips away melodrama and sentimentality, choosing instead to deliver a quiet yet emotionally devastating portrayal of inner conflict. Anthony Wong delivers a haunting, deeply layered performance as a man caught between his doctrine and his desire for vengeance. His interactions with the guilt-ridden Lok are tense, charged, and painfully human.
💡 Valley of the Shadow of Death is not just a story about justice or religion—it is a meditation on the very human struggle to reconcile belief with unbearable pain. Can faith survive when forgiveness feels impossible?
