From The Way We Dance to She Remembers, He Forgets, and now The Way We Talk, Adam Wong has built a reputation as one of Hong Kong’s most empathetic and quietly powerful directors. His stories often center on the marginalised—youth, dreamers, those navigating identities—and this year, his work has once again earned industry-wide recognition.
With The Way We Talk, Wong has been nominated for Best Director (Top Five Finalist) at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards—a testament to his long-standing commitment to human stories told with care and depth.
The film, which explores language, identity, and deaf culture, was the result of five years of research and collaboration. As a hearing director entering a Deaf-centered narrative, Wong spent years immersing himself in the community, learning about the complexities of Hong Kong Sign Language, and working with Deaf actors to ensure authenticity and respect.
His storytelling avoids easy answers. In presenting the ideological divide between oralism and sign language, Wong does not judge. Instead, he observes, empathises, and invites viewers into a deeply human conflict: when the world doesn’t hear you, how do you choose to be seen?
This nomination not only reflects his directorial excellence—it celebrates his humility, integrity, and ability to give voice (and silence) the cinematic weight they deserve.
